In a virtual press conference held on the 30th of April, 2020, Belize’s Prime Minister, Hon. Dean Barrow addressed the nation regarding what life will be like as we enter into a new stage of the COVID-19 battle. With more than 18 days passed since the last reported coronavirus case and only 3 active cases pending recovery, Hon. Dean Barrow assures Belize is better off than most.

“Belize is better off than most countries.”

Due to early border closures and measures taken by the Government of Belize, the COVID-19 situation in Belize is controlled. Thanks to decisive measures, Belize essentially bought additional time to prepare if, and when, new cases arise. However, Prime Minister Hon. Dean Barrow stresses that Belize is not out of the woods yet. As we know, details change almost daily. Citizens of Belize must continue with all precautions, even if cases recover. Specifically, a strict social distance of 6 feet and a mandatory face mask when in public.

Belize’s Current State of Emergency in COVID-19

Effective May 1st, 2020, Belize has extended its COVID-19 related State of Emergency for another 60 days. However, businesses are slowly re-opening under the allowance of the new measures of Belize’s SI65. These re-openings must abide by the Ministry of Health’s measures. Businesses include Government Offices, Lawyers, Real Estate Agents, Accountants, Carpenters, Electricians, Wholesalers and Retailers, Hotels (local guests only), plus Beauty Salons and Barber shops by appointment only.

Failure to follow any of the updated requirements may result in a fine, or even jail time.
