The 11th Annual Blue Water Classic Fishing Tournament

by McNab Editorial Team

Calling all anglers! The 11th Annual  Blue Water Classic Fishing Tournament is soon here!
Mark your calendars for October 12 and 13th for one of the most exciting tournaments yet!

The Blue Water Classic fishing tournament has been the longest-running tournament for The Belize Game Fishing Association. It remains a popular tournament for avid anglers both locally and regionally. Last year  the tournament had 23 boats compete, with 6 boats making their journey over from Honduras, Omoa, Puerto Cortes and Roatan.

This year the committee expects a similar amount of boats to come out, for a weekend full of fishing and great fun.

The location of this tournament has moved this year! Originally held in the South at South Water Caye, this year the tournament will be held at St. George’s Caye. Just 7 miles off the coast of Belize City, one of the closest islands from Belize City, and is easily accessible from the other northern cayes, such as Caye Caulker, and Ambergris Caye.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This year stakes are even higher with the tournaments prize money being even more than it was last year. This year the first place is set at $15,000 with plenty of other prizes being offered! Apart from prizes being awarded to 1st place – 5 places boats, other prizes will be given for the following categories:

  • Heaviest Wahoo
  • Heaviest Dorado
  • Heaviest Kingfish
  • Heaviest Tuna

As the sun peaks over the horizon, boats will be gearing up for a day of action. Lines can be out from 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Many of the boats set with eyes set on catching Belize’s elusive Blue Marlin. Last year there was a total of 21 Dorado and 5 Wahoo weighed along with the three Blue Marlin releases, with two of them estimated to be around 250lb. Let’s see if this year can top that!

The island will be buzzing for two days! If you are not fishing, the BGFA has you covered! You can be sure to enjoy the atmosphere of the tournament and see the competitors bringing their fish to the scale by 4:00 PM.
