Belize is a tropical retreat known for its lush jungles, laidback beach towns, spectacular coral reef, and of course its year-round warm weather. While the heat of the Caribbean sun is one of the country’s biggest draws, sometimes you need to cool of in a creative way. The summer months bring especially balmy weather to Belize so if you’re looking for a break from the heat, here are some fun and refreshing activities to keep you cool and invigorated.
1. Shower Under a Waterfall

One of the most invigorating and Instagram-able ways to beat the heat in Belize is to take a dip in one of its many stunning waterfalls. These natural cascades offer cool, clear waters that are picture perfect for a refreshing shower or swim. Many of the country’s best falls are in secluded areas surrounded by pristine natural beauty. Reaching them is half the fun and adventure. A few favorites are Big Rock Falls in Cayo’s Mountain Pine Ridge, Antelope Falls in the Mayflower Bocawina National Park, and Maya King Waterfall near the Placencia Peninsula.
2. Explore Cool Underground Caverns on a Cave Tour
Belize is home to an extensive network of caves that provide a natural air-conditioned escape from the tropical heat. Embark on a cave tubing adventure through Caves Branch Outpost and Nohoch Che’en Archaeological Site, where you’ll float on an inner tube down a refreshing lazy river ride and wind through a series of spectacular underground caverns. For a more adventurous experience, join a tour of the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave. You’ll trek, swim, and climb through sacred caves filled with ancient Mayan artifacts. The temperature drops significantly as you delve deeper into the cave, providing a cool respite from the sun.
3. Set to Sea on a Breezy Sail or Snorkeling Trip

What better way to cool off than by taking to the sea? Belize’s coastline is dotted with idyllic islands and vibrant coral reefs, making it a perfect destination for sailing and snorkeling. Hop on a catamaran or Hobie Cat and feel the refreshing sea breeze. Or, dive into the turquoise waters to explore the abundant marine life. The crystal-clear ocean is not only a visual feast but also a perfect reprieve from the heat and humidity of summer.
4. Stay Cool By The Pool

Would it even be summer without a lazy day in a lounger beside a pool? Take a plunge and loaf around the swimming pool for a few hours to beat the Belize heat. Choose between a serene setting at a tranquil jungle resort or a day-party atmosphere at one of San Pedro’s swim-up bars. For family fun and food, check out Captain Hooks Shrimp Co in Ladyville, Kukumba Beach in Belize City, San Ignacio Resort Hotel in Cayo, or Placencia Beach Club.
5. Enjoy a Frozen Treat or Frosty Beverage

Sometimes, all you need to cool down is a delicious, icy treat. Belize boasts a variety of local paletas (popsicles) and ice cream shops that hawk homemade confections that are as invigorating as they are indulgent. Visit The Ice Cream Shoppe in San Ignacio for a scoop of their famous coconut ice cream. Head to Cool Cone in San Pedro’s Truck Stop for a classic scoop of rum raisin. For a true local experience, seek out street vendors selling homemade paletas. These fruity frozen treats come in a variety of tropical flavors like mango, pineapple, and soursop. They’re perfect for a quick cool-down on a hot day! If your sweet tooth has been satisfied but you are still in search of a bit more refreshment, an ice-cold Belikin beer at a beach bar like Tipsy Tuna always seems to do the trick too.
