Enjoy Live Music at These Placencia Hangouts

by Megan Rodden

The cute and quirky village of Placencia is a haven for the habitually laid-back and the epicenter of easy-going vibes.  Placencia’s motto is “barefoot perfect” and many of the village’s establishments subscribe to the ideology of “no shirt, no shoes, no problem.” With its plethora of beach bars and open-air dining establishments, it is an insouciant mecca for musicians.  If you like live music in intimate, informal settings then you’ll love Placencia’s music scene.  Here are six cool and casual hangouts to wander into for musical performances.

Tipsy Tuna

This colorful bar on the beach is a long-established and much-loved watering hole, eatery, and gathering place for both locals and visitors.   Known for their cold drinks and cool ocean breeze, Tipsy Tuna is the perfect place to chill out to some tunes.  Join them on Wednesday nights when they host the incredibly talented local collective of Garifuna drummers and dancers from nearby Seine Bight village.  Traditional dress and ceremonial masks complement the performances, and the artists will share nuances of the language or explanations of the rituals during the show to educate visitors on the fascinating and unique culture.  The exuberant beating of drums and happy voices raised in song can be heard a long way up and down the beach, beckoning visitors towards Tipsy Tuna.

Simply Vibes Garden Bar

Midway between Maya Beach and Placencia is Simply Vibes Garden Bar, a simple and spacious haunt to hang at with family and friends.  Relax with a refreshing beverage and play a round of darts or giant Jenga in the garden.  Bands perform most Friday nights at Simply Vibes and the genre rotates between classic rock, reggae, contemporary, and pop.

Strange Brew

Lose your inhibitions, this is a judgment-free zone!  The carefree place to be on a Sunday night is Strange Brew– for karaoke.  Belt out a tune or two or simply enjoy watching the regulars do their thing.  If you’re a visiting musician you can swing in to Strange Brew on a Wednesday evening for their “open jam,” where anyone is welcome to perform.

Cha Chi’s

The usual suspects of local talent make a round-robin of the peninsula’s establishments, but Cha Chi’s is bringing a bit of diversity to the same old scene. They’re providing an opportunity for the regular guys to stretch their repertoire and they’re retaining bigger name acts from outside the immediate area.  Cha Chi’s provides a more structured atmosphere for musicians and promotes the bands as primary entertainment and not simply background noise in a bar.  They have lighting and a proper soundboard that set the stage for performances as a focal point for your evening.

The Other Side

Stay cool in the pool and swim up to the bar for a beverage at The Other Side.  Kick back in a floatie or on a lounge chair to enjoy mellow tunes by the Island Vibes band most weekends.  When country music recording artist, Big Kenny, visited Belize, he played a free, impromptu, acoustic concert here around the pool and then donated his guitar to a local charity.

The Brew Barge

Rock the boat!  Hobbs Brewing Company’s bar and restaurant isn’t your typical craft beer tasting room.  Moored in the Placencia Lagoon, you can board the massive Brew Barge to sample a rotating variety of Hobbs beers on tap, select from a full menu of food items, and rock out to live music.  Karaoke and casual performances throughout the week are routine, but Brew Barge also hosts a large music festival on their lawn over a weekend during the summer.
