As a fishing novice, the adventure of learning the skill that many spend years perfecting is a special treat. The idea of being able to reel in my first bonefish had me up bright and early! By 7:00 AM we were on our way to fuel up and head over to Cayo Rosario with our guide, Jorge from Blue Bonefish Fly Shop and Tours. Cayo Rosario is a small mangrove caye that is a short 10-15-minute ride North West of Ambergris Caye. A haven for the fly fishing community, it is located in the center of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and attracts fly fishing aficionados from all around the world.
It was the perfect day, the wind was blowing, the sun was out and we were in good spirits. The first lesson was about familiarizing ourselves with the gear and fly fishing practices. From our 23 foot Panga, we practiced our cast on the poling platform as well as in the water. While we ultimately didn’t catch a fish, just being out in the elements and appreciating the natural beauty around us was fulfilling. If anything was caught it was us, because now we’re hooked and know that one day we just might catch a grand slam!
