Learn to Slow Down With a Trip to This Beloved Beach Destination

by Khaila Gentle

Belize expat and owner of Placencia Beach Club Shane Kenny says that he is a “much more relaxed man today” than when he first arrived to Belize’s Placencia Peninsula. The 16-mile-long finger of land sits on the country’s southeastern coast and has often been hailed as home to some of the region’s best beaches. Over the years, the peninsula has grown in popularity, and some might even feel that it could one day give the country’s top destination, Ambergris Caye, a run for its money. Even so, Placencia remains a casual and laidback answer to Ambergris’ buzzing party vibe.

“Gone are the days of always feeling like I’m in a rush, or I’m late for something,” says Kenny in an International Living article on how Belize taught him to go slow. From his four years living in the country, the beach club owner believes he has mastered the art of slowing down. But even if you’re not looking to relocate and put down roots in Belize, you can still learn a lot about pressing the brakes and living the unhurried life. Ditch the hustle and bustle for a while and spend a few days in Belize. Here’s exactly how you can enjoy slowing down while visiting the beloved beach destination that is Placencia.

How to Slow Down in Placencia, Belize

It’s not hard to enjoy an unhurried holiday when in Belize. The small communities that make up the Placencia Peninsula each have their own distinct vibe. Nevertheless, each provides a refreshing respite from the usual fast-paced life that many have grown accustomed to. From sampling local eats on a walking tour of Placencia Village to exploring Maya Beach by bike, in Placencia, learning to slow down simply means fully embracing each immersive experience and taking the time to get to know the destination.
