Have you ever wondered why fall is the only season that goes by two names? It’s a conundrum chosen by academics at Bellevue University for a research study. And, according to that study, the answer is simple: In the earliest societies, fall and spring weren’t even really a thing. After the U.S. Revolution, however, the name of the season between summer and winter became a linguistic point of contention. It was one of many between settlers and the British as the U.S. looked for specific ways to differentiate words. It seems, researchers found, that the British “hated the word fall,” and to this day, they still use autumn to describe this transitional season.

No Matter What You Call It:
