If you have been itching to escape the doldrums of daily life and long for a chance to plunge into the depths of a tropical paradise’s seas, there are few venues better suited for scratching that itch than Belize.
Belize is perched right beside the crystal-blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. As a travel destination, there’s less of a risk of plans misfiring here than in other countries due to the fact that English is the official language. Meanwhile, a large majority of its population also speaks Spanish. As a country offering some of the world’s best diving locations, here’s an idea of just what awaits you down in Belize’s depths, particularly when diving with Splash Belize, located on the Placencia Peninsula.

Recognized as one of the more popular dive packages, this experience takes you around Gladden Spit, a known spot for viewing whale sharks. It includes two days of whale shark diving at Gladden Spit. It also features dives along the Belize Barrier Reef and at the Blue Hole, all of them taking off from one of the country’s marine reserves.

If you want the best, but not guaranteed, chances of seeing a whale shark in person, this would be your best opportunity to do so. Because these sorts of diving experiences are entirely dependent upon the activity cycle of the whale sharks, they are best undertaken during April, May and June.

If you want the absolute premier diving experience, this package covers the Great Blue Hole, the Belize Barrier Reef and the atolls of Glover’s Reef and Lighthouse Reef. The latter also allows for easy access to the Half Moon Caye Natural Monument, which serves as a rookery to the red-footed booby. If you fancy marine life at all, this is the tour for you. It affords a huge opportunity to see turtles, rays, nurse sharks and even whale sharks if you want to add more to the experience.
This sort of experience begins with diving and snorkeling experiences along the Silk Caye or Queen Caye Marine Reserves. The snorkel trip specifically will take you just within the barrier reef and to a spot where fishermen clean their catches. If you fancy a photo op with the local sea creatures, this is a prime spot.

While the Blue Hole is usually just a day trip, sufficient interest can also turn it into an overnight adventure for groups. This experience leaves early in the morning, after a continental breakfast, before heading off to South Water Caye. After diving here, brunch is served. Then head off to “The Elbow” of Turneffe Atoll for plenty of shots of pelagios, another variety of shark.
After that it’s back on to the boat for a trip to Long Caye. Overnight at a resort, then consider a pre-breakfast dive by the Blue Hole when the divers are few but the sharks are plenty. Then, head over to Half Moon Caye for more diving. And finally, take another trek to the South Water Caye Marine Reserve before the return to Placencia.
