What does it take to capture a magazine cover?

The Caribbean Culture & Lifestyle Summer Issue

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. However, what they didn’t say is that it probably took a thousand hours of effort to capture it. While we are obviously speaking in hyperbole, capturing the cover of a magazine is no walk in the park. It is, however, incredibly inspiring when the subject and setting come together just right. Luckily, that was the case for the shooting of Caribbean Culture & Lifestyles’ second cover. Though it cannot be said the shooting was a breeze, it was, of course, a pleasure to work surrounded by natural beauty.

The subject was not only a stunning model but Belize’s very own Special Envoy for Women and Children and wife to Belize’s Prime Minister, Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow. Two days of shooting and weeks of preparation allowed for one of the most fun-filled production sets to date. Our photographers make–up artist, production manager and creative director all came together to create magic!

The Beauty of The Lodge at Chaa Creek

A mesmerizing backdrop, the Lodge at Chaa Creek is a world-class eco-resort. It’s owned by spouses Mick and Lucy Fleming. What started out as a 140-acre farm on the Macal River in the Cayo district is now an impressive property that not only features the usual resort amenities, but also a natural history museum, Maya organic farm, and a nature reserve. Chaa Creek is an eco-resort that has dedicated its effort to champion environmental conservation, natural history, sustainable tourism, and natural history education.

The Summer Issue, which marks the second issue of the publication, features Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow. The Special Envoy for Women and Children is depicted in the serene setting of the Macal River. Looking off to the river bank she paddles upstream in one of Chaa Creek’s signature red canoes. We are grateful to the folks at Chaa Creek, Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow and the CC+L team for providing the perfect cover for our summer issue. Looking forward, we hope to have experiences like this one every time we shoot!
