Sure, we may have all seen the viral TikTok videos where one partner plans out the date for the other, laying out an outfit and a time of day to be ready for. But what if this year, you’re looking to push past just ‘igniting the spark’ between you and your special someone? Instead, set it ablaze with a romantic getaway, and whisk them away to Belize. On Valentines Day this year, step into your inner romance novel by gifting simply a love note: “Pack your bags for Belize, we’ll be there February 16th through 22nd, and staying at SunBreeze Suites.” That’s one way to liven up a Tuesday.
Short and sweet, a quick escapade to an island in the sun (in the middle of the Caribbean Sea that’s sheltered by the Belize Barrier Reef, might I add) is more than enough to be an unforgettable experience for you and yours. You may have heard the clichéd tagline for the destination: you better Belize it! Or even UnBelizeAble. Almost embarrassingly, we’d like to do another: Baelize. Ready?
Attire: beach casual. Destination: SunBreeze Suites, Ambergris Caye. Belize, Central America. Visa: none required for U.S. citizens. Flight? Less than 2 hours one-way from Miami. Paradise really is closer than you think. First things first, your itinerary—whether you keep it a surprise is all up to you.
1. Get dive certified together on the Belize Barrier Reef
Or if you’re not as adventurous, simply go snorkeling on a private tour organized with SunBreeze’s on-site 5-Star PADI dive center, Ambergris Divers. You only need about 3 days total for your Open Water certification, and it’ll open the door to a lifetime of adventures ahead underwater. Besides, what’s not to love when the Belize Barrier Reef breaks just offshore from Ambergris Caye and the beachfront SunBreeze Suites, just about 500 meters away. Where else would you be able to brag about seeing the world’s second-largest barrier reef up close and personal? Two-tank dives start as low as $90 per person.
Awarded the Belize Tourism Board Restaurant of the Year 2022, the iconic Elvi’s Kitchen recently reopened after a month of renovations with a fresh façade and new tasty surprises on its menu. As one of the first restaurants on the island of Ambergris Caye, this family-owned and operated eatery tackles traditional Belizean food with an upbeat (and upscale) twist, particularly focusing on Maya and Mestizo cuisine alongside sustainably-sourced seafood. Chef Jennie Staines leans heavily on comforting Yucatec flavors for her signature dishes, like annatto-spiced pork Pibil and rich coconut curry for sweet stone crab. Don’t even get us started on the drinks.
Relax in the sandy-floored dining room, warmly interrupted by a light-wrapped flamboyant tree, or in their air-conditioned seating area, peppered with local art. With over 40 years of experience under their belt, it’s easy to see why Elvi’s Kitchen is a matchless foodie hotspot, again and again.
If there’s one thing that is incredibly meaningful without requiring too much effort, it’s an experience. Beyond this entire trip, this is the mic drop moment. Inscribed as a composite of Belize’s World Heritage Site, the Great Blue Hole–whose official name is the Blue Hole Natural Monument–is an almost perfect circular chasm of deep, indigo blue, bordered by a ring of underwater coral that almost resembles land from above. From Ambergris Caye, it’s about a 2.5-hour drive by boat; luckily, domestic airlines like Maya Island Air offer flyover tours of the Blue Hole, while Astrum Helicopters goes further for a private tour, including ‘reef surfing.’ Clocking in at 1000ft across and more than 400ft deep, Belize’s Great Blue Hole is actually the only “blue hole” on earth visible from space.
So much natural beauty surrounds this beachfront resort and luckily, it doesn’t end just outside your door. Your couple’s getaway could be complete with an outdoor pool, sundeck, and private balcony for breathtaking views in almost every room. The growing town on the 25-mile island is a working fishing and tourism-centric village, making the property particularly alluring for the seafood-inclined and eco-adventurer.
Early on, we mentioned you’d be staying from February 16th through 22nd. That’s because Sunbreeze Suites launched their ‘Love In Belize’ 6-night promo in an ocean view suite for just US$1340 per couple, inclusive tax available on direct bookings. We cut out the tough part for you —finding this unBelizeable (ha!) itinerary—the rest is up to you. Quality time in Belize, coming right up.
