What’s Happening in Belize in May: Events, Activities, and More

With hot, sunny weather and few rainy days, May is the peak of springtime in Belize. It’s also what we like to refer to as the beginning of the country’s festival season. With that said, there’s certainly a calendar packed full of events, dinners, festivities, and more in Belize this month. Here’s a look at what’s happening in Belize in May.

May 5th –  Unplugged at Cork Street with TLC Band 

Enjoy live local music with a round of Flor de Caña specials at Belize City’s favorite seaside whiskey bar. Unplugged at Cork Street is a monthly event that features a different Belizean musician each time. In May, revel in the musical stylings of the popular TLC band. This eight member multi-genre ensemble hails from Orange Walk and will certainly be bringing good vibes. 

May 7th – A Sound Bath Session at Jaguar Reef

Treat yourself to a one-of-a-kind healing experience on the beaches of Hopkins. The Belize Collection, for the second time ever, will be having a sound bath healing session hosted by sound healer Essie Marie. Book a one night package (which comes complete with a 3-course dinner) or attend just the event for BZ $50 (US $25) at the Lodge at Jaguar Reef. 

May 12th – Drive-in Theater at Di Bruwry 

Speaking of unique experiences, Di Bruwry’s first ever drive-in theater is sure to be a memorable occasion – especially considering the feature movie stars “baba yaga” himself. Catch the fourth installment of the John Wick series at 7:00 pm. Tickets are going for BZ $99 and includes admission for one car, two 32 oz. Belikin crowlers, and one party platter.

May 14th – Mother’s Day 

Like many other countries across the world, Mother’s Day is observed in May in Belize. If you’re a mom or are hoping to treat the mother-figure in your life, here are a couple of events taking place on the day.

  • Itz’ana’s Local Artisan Market – On the beaches of Placencia, Itz’ana’s monthly local market falls on mother’s day this month. Enjoy shopping around for artisan crafts and other products that make for amazing souvenirs. 
  • Moms + Mimosas by The Belize CollectionWhether in Placencia, in Hopkins, or near the picturesque Hummingbird Highway, enjoy a delightful brunch with The Belize Collection. The Paddle House, Grove House and Restaurante Laguna will all be the setting for a “Moms + Mimosas” brunch. 
  • Mother’s Day Brunch at the Biltmore – Indulge in as many fry jacks as you’d like with mom, courtesy of the Best Western Plus Belize Biltmore Plaza. For just BZ $65, get to enjoy brunch at one of the Belize District’s top stays. Complete with live music courtesy saxphonist Camal Bloomfield, brunch will be from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

May 13th & 14th – Cashew Fest

The two-day Cashew Festival marks the start of the Cashew season in Belize. Learn all about this intriguing fruit and the hard work that goes into harvesting the cashew nut. Imbibe in some cashew wine or snack on stewed cashews, and enjoy a weekend of family-friendly fun in the historic village of Crooked Tree. This year’s Cashew Fest promises to be bigger and better than ever, complete with an agricultural show, rides, and live entertainment. 

May 14th – Belize Conch Season Closes 

While not an event, the closure of Belize’s conch season means that after May 14th, fishing for conch will be a punishable offense. So get your fill of conch fritters and other delicacies now since the season will be closed until October 1, 2023.

May 19th & 20th – Belize Chocolate Festival 

For lovers of all things cacao, May in Belize also equates to the annual Chocolate Festival. Enjoy two whole days of chocolatey goodness down south in Toledo, starting with an elegant gala at Copal Tree Lodge. Learn about Maya culture, sample cacao products, and enjoy an immersive experience that you’ll be dying to return to the following year.

May 20th – EU in the Park 

A day of family fun, EU in the Park is set to have loads of games, performances, kid-friendly activities, and even a movie at sunset. Head out to the Digi Park in Belize City from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm and, while you’re at it, make it an event for the entire family. Children’s yoga, art classes, face painting, recycling workshops, dances, and much more await at this European Union event. 

May 27th – Cancer Walk 

Belize’s Cancer Walk takes place on May 27th this year. Organized by the Belize Cancer Society. The annual walkathon will start at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City, with assembly beginning at 4:45 am, warm up at 5:15 am, and the official start at 6:00 am. You can also show your support for the Cancer Society by purchasing Cancer Walk themed gear like shirts and hats.
