Private & Offshore Islands

Belize’s main islands get most of the attention, but the country’s real snorkel and diving credentials, and its most private getaways, are further out to sea. Beyond Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker lie two full coral atolls and a scattering of smaller private islands, most reachable only by boat or helicopter, where the reef is healthier, the crowds are thinner, and in some cases you’re the only guests on the island.

Turneffe Atoll

Turneffe is the largest of Belize’s three atolls and sits closer to the mainland than Lighthouse Reef, making it a common day trip destination from Ambergris Caye or a base for a longer stay at one of the small lodges scattered across its cayes. It offers a genuinely wide range of diving and snorkeling, from shallow reef flats good for beginners to dramatic wall dives on its outer edge, and it’s also one of the better spots in the country for permit and bonefishing on its flats. Turneffe’s size means it holds up well even on busier days, since dive and fishing sites are spread across a much larger area than a single reef.

Lighthouse Reef and the Great Blue Hole

Further offshore, Lighthouse Reef is home to Belize’s most famous natural landmark: the Great Blue Hole, a nearly perfectly circular sinkhole plunging over 400 feet deep, visible from the air as a striking dark circle against the surrounding turquoise water. It’s a bucket list dive for experienced divers, and an increasingly popular scenic flyover for travelers who’d rather see it from above. The atoll is also home to Half Moon Caye Natural Monument, a protected bird sanctuary and one of the best places in the country to see a red footed booby colony up close, along with excellent snorkeling around its wall.

Because Lighthouse Reef sits roughly 50 miles off the coast, most visits are arranged as full day boat trips from Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, or as multi-day live aboard dive trips for travelers focused specifically on the Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye.

St. George’s Caye: A Neighborhood Island Near Belize City

Not every private island in Belize sits far offshore. St. George’s Caye is only about 8 miles out and roughly 20 minutes by boat from Belize City, no domestic flight required, which makes it one of the easiest offshore escapes to reach in the entire country. It also happens to sit right along the barrier reef, with good snorkeling within a short swim of the dock. Casa Al Mar is an all-inclusive private villa on the caye built for families and small groups, with a private boat and captain, chef-prepared meals, and guided reef excursions included in the stay. It’s a good option for travelers who want a genuine private island experience without the longer boat ride or flight that some of Belize’s more remote cayes require.

Private Islands: Total Seclusion Off Placencia

Closer to Belize’s southern coast, a handful of small private cayes offer a different kind of offshore experience: total exclusivity rather than big atoll diving. Ray Caye Island Resort is one of the best examples, a small private island reachable by boat from Placencia, built around overwater and beachfront accommodations with nothing else on the island but the resort itself. It’s the kind of place suited to travelers who want an entire island to feel like their own, with easy access to reef snorkeling and diving right off the property.

Moho Caye, also just off Placencia, offers a different way to experience an offshore island: as a day trip and camping destination rather than an overnight resort. It’s a good option for travelers who want a taste of private island life, with white sand beaches and fly fishing access, without committing to a multi-night stay. Both islands make Placencia one of the best mainland bases in the country for reaching Belize’s smaller offshore cayes.

Planning an Offshore Trip

Many offshore excursions are organized as day trips out of Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, or Placencia, with dive shops and tour operators handling the boat logistics, gear, and permits required for protected areas like Half Moon Caye. Overnight stays on the outer atolls or private cayes typically need to be booked directly with the resort or a travel agent, since transportation and other logistics need to be arranged as part of the stay. 

Best Time to Visit

Visibility and sea conditions are generally best during the dry season, from late November through May, which is also the most popular and most heavily booked window for Blue Hole dive trips and live aboards. Calmer early morning departures are typical practice for the longer offshore crossings regardless of season.
