Whether fishing in the mangrove lagoon, flats, or near the barrier reef; there are a variety of gamefish species for you to discover. These fish species would include barracuda, snapper, amberjack, king mackerel, and tuna. While near the reef you can find sailfish, wahoo, marlin, and dorados. In the flats, there are grouper, snapper, bonefish, and tarpons. However, different species are found more in certain months; for example, lobster and conch.
For those with a preference for fly fishing, there is an area called “Permit Alley”. Here you can find plenty of snook and tarpon throughout the year. Schools of permits are normally around the flats and sandbars. Bonefish can be easily found all year round, but they are found in larger numbers from April to October in lagoons and flats.
A little heads up…
In order to fish in Belize, you’ll need a fishing license, which can be ordered online and prices range from $10-$25. However, fishing here comes with some restrictions when it comes to the species of fish. Conch and lobster can only be caught during their seasonal times, sharks and rays are not to be caught at all.
