San Pedro Gets a New 24-Hour Private Hospital

by Khaila Gentle

On Friday, February 23rd, the island of Ambergris Caye saw the inauguration of the long-awaited Ambergris Hope Hospital. What was once a small, private health center, helmed by Dr. Daniel Gonzalez, has been transformed into a fully equipped, modern hospital. Set on Pescador Drive in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Hope promises cutting-edge technology alongside compassionate care.

The new 24-hour private hospital is a much-welcomed addition to the island’s infrastructure—especially considering that it is one of the most rapidly growing municipalities in Belize. What’s more, it brings along with it many firsts for Ambergris Caye, which, according to local newspaper Ambergris Today, includes an operating theater, a pediatrician, and CT scanning.

Dr. Daniel Gonzales (or Dr. Danny as he is affectionately known) opened his own private clinic in April 2003. Gonzales chose the name Ambergris Hope Clinic. His choice of the name, he said, was because the establishment would be “providing hope to the people who are sick.” Over the years, Gonzales became a medical pioneer on Ambergris Caye. Among many other accomplishments, he played a role in the island obtaining its first hyperbaric chambers.

Today, Ambergris Hope Hospital offers a wide range of services, including radiology, chronic care management, and pediatric surgery.
