Will The Caribbean Be On The Green List for Brits’ Summer Holidays?

by Carolee Chanona

With a roadmap out of lockdown, British sunseekers anxiously await details of where they can go for their first non-essential trip, as of May 17.  The government’s traffic light system could see sunny holidays in places such as Portugal and Malta given the thumbs up—but what about the Caribbean? Safer ‘green’ countries expected to be on the list are based on vaccination rollout, infection rates and whether there are any variants of concern in the country; Grant Shapps could give the thumbs up to quarantine-free travel to Caribbean islands such as Barbados and Jamaica, among other successful vaccination programs in the Caribbean. With rising vaccination rates, the majority of the Caribbean region is expected to be on the Green List—a list of places that visitors won’t have to quarantine when they return back to the UK—by June 2021.

For Caribbean islands on the amber list, it means you will need:

  • A negative test taken before returning to the UK
  • Mandatory ten-day quarantine at home
  • Two Covid tests, taken on day two and day eight

What are the travel restrictions for the Caribbean?

Travel restrictions to the Caribbean are dependent on the destination. For example, Belize has no travel bans on the UK, and waive their COVID-19 entry test requirement for fully-vaccinated travelers. Those without immunization can either present a negative COVID-19 test—either PCR within 96 hours of arrival, a Rapid Test within 48 hours of arrival, or take a US$50 Rapid Test on arrival inside the airport’s testing clinic. Additionally, Belize is one of only 15 countries in the world ranked as Level 2 by the U.S. State Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

With no quarantine on arrival, Brits visiting Belize can vacation with ease by staying at a Gold Standard Certified Accommodation. As of May 11, travelers no longer need to complete their Belize Health App declaration as an entry requirement. A breakdown of entry requirements is given on the Belize Tourism Board’s website hereBelize entry requirements may 2021 covid
On the other hand, Barbados designates the UK as a high-risk country, meaning Brits must arrive with a negative PCR test taken by a certified or accredited laboratory within three days of arrival. On arrival, people from the UK must undergo a rapid antigen test under current rules. If positive, they will be tranferred to the government isolation facility, while those whoa re negative will be required to quarantine at approved facilities and undertake a further test five days after arrival.

Travel rules and restrictions differ for each Caribbean destination, so it’s best to check before jetting off (if given the go ahead by the government’s traffic light list).
