Go Slow – A Day in Caye Caulker
Original Article By Charlie Jones
Time halts on this island, making it seem like the rest of the world is left to buzz on by.
Caye Caulker’s town motto is “Go Slow” for a reason. Once a fishing village, the island has created its own very special brand of laid-back tourism. Always a highlighted Belize destination, unhurried development blends with the natural beauty and culture of this Caye creating a unique island vibration.
Here, Everything is irie maan!
The villagers are warm and inviting, always eager to share their island life experience with whoever fancies a listen. It is the simplicity of living with the elements that charms you first. A place where you can observe children riding on handlebars and people strolling down the street barefooted with shrimp kabob in hand.
Sandy lanes functioning as streets are not frequented by heavy traffic but instead by golf carts, bikes, sun-kissed pedestrians, and the ever-wandering island dogs. Cast a line off a pier, lay back in a hammock or walk into town where you’ll find all manner of restaurants and activities to entertain your stay.
Only about five miles long, the focal point of this destination is the beautiful Caribbean Sea. Take a snorkeling trip with Raggamuffin Tours and sail on aquamarine waters. Make new friends and swim with stingrays and nurse sharks or choose to float over coral gardens watching as a myriad of colorful fish dart in and out of the countless nooks and crannies of the reef.
No day would be complete without a trip to the Northside of Caye Caulker. The newest excitement of the island, KoKo King Restaurant, and Bar. Koko King is a hot spot for beach bums during the day and party-goers at night. It features a private beach, day beds, a pool, and a deck perfect for watching the sunset with a Belikin beer in hand.
Don’t forget to “catch” The 4th Annual FrenchiesOffshore Open which is taking place this weekend in Caye Caulker!
