The Belize Fisheries Department informs fishers and the public that the Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) season will close on midnight February 28, 2021. Previously, the Spiny Lobster season closed on February 15 to midnight of June 14, of any year. Now, the close season for spiny lobster will be from March 1 to June 30 in any year. Yes, that date becomes effective with Belize’s 2020-2021 Lobster Season! So, consumers and fishers now have two more weeks to sustainably enjoy this seafood fishery during the 2020 Season. Play your part: don’t purchase lobster and other seafood products when out of season.
The decision made by Hon. Andre Perez, Minister of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, in consultation with the Fisheries Department and the industry, is in accordance with the Fisheries Regulation 24A (1). Now, the close season for spiny lobster will be from March 1st to June 30th in any year. The changes in the close season for Belize are also in accordance with the harmonized regional lobster regulation (OSP-02-09) implemented by the Organization for Central American Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector (OSPESCA).

Any person found in possession of lobster during the said closed season will be prosecuted; this is in accordance with the Fisheries Regulations, Chapter 210 of the Subsidiary Laws of Belize Revised Edition 2003 and the Fisheries Resources Act No. 7 of 2020. The Fisheries Department also reminds fishers that lobster traps should be removed from fishing grounds during the closed season. The Department will be actively enforcing the removal of traps from the waters during this period.
