The Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards recognizes the most outstanding destinations and businesses in the travel industry. The winners, selected by T+L readers, cover cities, hotels, airlines, tour operators, and more from across the globe. This week, the travel publication released the list of winners for 2024, with categories as diverse as the awardees themselves. One such category was Travel + Leisure Reader’s 5 Favorite Islands in Mexico and Central & South America. While Belize’s most popular islands, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker round out the top three, it was ultimately Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands that reigned supreme. Here are the results for the 2024 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards category: 5 Favorite Islands in Mexico and Central and South America
The Galapagos Islands Prevail As T+L Readers’ #1 Favorite Island
For the 24th consecutive year, the Galapagos Islands have been named the best island to visit out of all those that dot the coasts of Mexico, Central America, and South America. A destination for adventurers and nature lovers, the Ecuadorian archipelago is home to some 9,000 species. Travel + Leisure readers have praised it for being truly one-of-a-kind and even soul-soothing.
Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye Round Out the Top 3
Often outshined by its larger (and more fast-paced) cousin, Ambergris Caye, the island of Caye Caulker has impressed travelers enough to snag the #2 position in the World’s Best Awards. According to Travel + Leisure, it’s the small coral island’s very laid-back nature that led readers to fall in love. Meanwhile, at number 3 on the list, Ambergris Caye has been praised for it luxe offerings.
At number 4 on the list is Mexico’s Isla Mujeres while Roatan Island in Honduras sits at number 5. Read the list here.
