When most people think of Belize, they picture its stunning beaches and famous attractions like Ambergris Caye or the Great Blue Hole. While these iconic spots are certainly worth a visit, there’s so much more to this beautiful country than meets the eye. If you’re looking to escape the crowds and experience Belize in a more intimate, off-the-beaten-path way, here are five hidden gems you absolutely need to add to your travel itinerary.

Tucked away in the jungles of southern Belize, Rio Blanco Waterfall is one of the country’s most serene and least-visited natural attractions. Surrounded by lush greenery, the area is perfect for a peaceful day trip where you can enjoy nature at its finest.

The trail leading to the falls is short but somewhat challenging, so bring sturdy shoes and be prepared to get wet as you make your way through the cool forest. Not only will you be rewarded with one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Belize, but you’ll also experience a secluded slice of paradise far from the typical tourist crowds. Don’t forget your camera; Rio Blanco is a true tropical gem! The falls are located about 10 miles from the town of Punta Gorda in southern Belize. So be sure to plan for the drive and make arrangements for a guide if you’re unfamiliar with the area.

While Cockscomb Basin might not be the most “hidden” of Belize’s gems, it’s still an essential stop for nature lovers who want to get off the tourist trail. The sanctuary is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including jaguars, ocelots, and over 300 species of birds. The hiking trails in Cockscomb Basin take you through lush rainforests, past rivers, and up to scenic lookouts. It’s an eco-tourist’s dream, offering a chance to experience Belize’s diverse wildlife up close and personal. While jaguars are elusive and hard to spot, you might catch a glimpse of other animals or hear their calls.

For those really looking for an adventure, consider booking a night tour or staying overnight at one of the sanctuary’s eco-lodges. The sounds of the jungle at night will make you feel like you’ve truly escaped into the wild. Be sure to bring plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and consider hiring a guide to increase your chances of spotting wildlife.

When people talk about the “Blue Hole,” they often refer to the famous marine sinkhole off the coast. However, Belize also has a beautiful freshwater Blue Hole located in the Cayo District. This little-known gem is part of the Blue Hole National Park. The park offers several scenic trails to explore. The Blue Hole itself is perfect for a refreshing swim.
