In March of last year, the Prince and Princess of Wales made a historic visit to Belize. The country was the first stop of a week-long Caribbean tour that saw them visit Jamaica and the Bahamas as well. As Princess Kate celebrates her 41st birthday today, here’s a look back at the royal visit to Belize.
A Grand Welcome
As they landed in Belize, Prince William and Princess Kate were greeted by a guard of honor from the Belize Defence Force at Belize City’s Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport on Saturday, March 19, 2022. They were welcomed by Governor-General of Belize, H.E. Dame Froyla Tzalam and recieved a 21 gun salute via three miniature cannons on the tarmac.
Journey to the South
The Prince and Princess then made their way south, where they were treated to lessons on the world of Maya chocolate making. After sampling fresh cacao and some chocolate products—including xocolatl—the couple then left the family-run Che’il Mayan Cacao Farm and Chocolate Factory in Maya Center Village for Hopkins Village. There, they experienced the Southern charm of the Garinagu.
Climbing Caana
Later, the royal couple took to the Cayo district, where they visited Belize’s tallest Maya temple at Caracol. There, they enjoyed a grand evening reception by Belize’s Governor General.
A Secret Diving Date at the Belize Barrier Reef
After their trip, Prince William and Kate made a splash with a surprise video. It showed them scuba diving the Belize Barrier Reef while visiting the country. The Royal couple spent time diving at South Water Caye and marveled at colorful colors, exotic reef fish, and even a friendly nurse shark as posted to the Prince and Princess of Wales’ official Instagram account.
