Travellers Liquors and Other Caribbean Rum Producers Celebrate CARICOM’s 50th Anniversary

by Khaila Gentle

For the past year, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has been celebrating its 50th anniversary in style. Since July 2023, the region has seen a host of commemorative events held under the slogan “50 Years Strong: A Solid Foundation to Build On”. This month, to further celebrate the milestone, 13 rum producers from across the Caribbean have crafted special blends that will be presented at the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting in Grenada next month. Among them is Belize’s very own Travellers Liquors, who revealed their CARICOM 50 Reserve Rum to the public this week. The rum, says Travellers distiller Mayito Perdomo, was aged for five years in select American oak barrels.

Caribbean rum producers will be toasting to CARICOM this year. Established on July 4th, 1973 to deepen regional integration, the Community has been observing its 50th year in existence. This month’s commemorative event, organized under the West Indies Rum and Spirits Producers Association (WIRSPA), will see each rum-producing CARICOM member state present its product to national governments. Then, in July, those attending the Heads of Government meeting in Grenada will have a chance to sample each of the thirteen rums. Travellers Liquors also plans to gift bottles of their blend to the CARICOM Secretariat for distribution. Travellers joins a host of reputable distillers including:

Travellers’ CARICOM 50 Reserve Rum is a smooth well-balanced spirit with notes of vanilla, caramel, and butterscotch, complimented with an array of oak spices and prunes. It can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks, but it also serves as an excellent base for a cocktail.
