Belize virtually celebrates Europe Day with the Head of Delegation to the European Union (EU) of Belize, Jamaica, Cayman, and Turks & Caicos!

Today, May 9, Belize joins the European Union Delegation in Jamaica to virtually celebrating Europe Day. Celebrated annually on May 9, Europe Day commemorates peace and unity in the European Union. Seventy years ago, a speech, ‘The Schuman Declaration’ by French foreign minister Robert Schuman, made history. Schuman’s call for political cooperation in Europe was a catalyst for what we now know as the European Union (EU).

Since then, Europe has enjoyed 70 years of solidarity, even past their borders. Europe and the Caribbean have a unique partnership, with unprecedented cooperation in recent years. Compared to a decade ago, European investments in Latin America and the Caribbean have more than doubled. With the 70th anniversary of Europe Day, Belize has prepared a video message. The EU Ambassador Malgorzata Wasilewska along with Minister of  Minister, Hon. Wilfred Elrington, shares a few words.

Europe and Belize share a partnership built on respect and trust. We know too well that we are stronger together.”

Her Excellency, Wasilewska, is also the Head of the Delegation to Belize, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Cayman Islands with the rank and title of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Jamaica has enjoyed a solid relationship spanning more than 40 years, and over that time, the EU has provided in excess of €1 billion in financial and technical assistance to the island.

The European Union and Belize

Like Jamaica, the European Union’s presence is highly regarded and celebrated in Belize. Our development cooperation with Belize spans more than 30 years and over €200 million in support, concentrated on agricultural development in the rural areas of the country. Additionally, Belize has received support in sustainable development through its energy sector, finance sector, and other major sectors.

For Europe Day 2020, a joint message from Belize and the Europe Union joins the global community in virtually celebration. Additionally, Ambassador Malgorzata Wasilewska confirms the EU will be committing €1 million to the Caribbean during COVID-19.
