How to Experience Belize Like a Local

Some people like to vacation without a firm schedule or plans. They say it makes them feel more like locals and less like visitors. If that’s how you want to approach your Belize vacation, here are some tips.

Travel Slowly

One of the best ways to experience Belize like a local is to travel the way locals do. Instead of jumping in a cab, use the bus lines to travel. This is also a cheap way to get around. Although local airlines crisscross the country, there are times you should skip them and enjoy a slower form of travel. Some of Belize’s highways are wonderfully scenic, and driving along them gives you the chance to check out some new places.

Since roads can be confusing and difficult to drive for a newbie, we recommend hiring a shuttle service for those longer trips.

If you’re traveling to one of the islands near Belize, take a water taxi for a scenic ride across the water.

In some places, you’ll have to go slowly whether you want to or not. Several towns and cities are off-limits to cars, as is the entire island of Caye Caulker. When you explore by foot, bicycle or golf cart, you get a chance to truly savor your surroundings.

Eat Local Favorites

If you get hungry during your explorations, eat at a local restaurant or check out the street stalls. Typically, this food is cheap, delicious and freshly made. You’ll get a chance to sample the authentic flavors of our many cuisines.

Eating like a local is more fun. It’s also a great way to save money on your vacation. Similarly, don’t insist on the brand names you’re used to from home. Sample our local foods, grocery items, soft drinks, beer, and rum. They taste great and cost a lot less than imported items.

Pick the Right Place

When you’re choosing your base in Belize, pick a spot that’s close to the activities you want to enjoy. If you want to enjoy beach life, go to San Pedro, Caye Caulker or Placencia. If you want to visit Maya ruins and nature preserves, try San Ignacio. Are you more interested in birding, the Belize Zoo, and Belize history? Stay close to Belize City. Do you want to do everything? Spend one or two days at each location.

Belize has festivals throughout the year. If there’s one taking place while you’re visiting, you’re in luck. They’re a great way to check out local artists, sample delicious local food, play games and listen to live music.

It’s Easy to Have Fun Here

Belize is a gorgeous country with something for everyone. You’ll have an enjoyable, relaxing vacation no matter what you choose to do.
