A Group-Travel Friendly Gem on Ambergris Caye’s Northern Coast

by Carolee Chanona

For a resort whose name translates into The Pearl of the Caribbean, La Perla del Caribe offers the style you’d expect from a place that’s named after gems. Its nine available villas — with names like Diamond, Emerald, and Ruby — are scattered throughout the sprawling seafront property. Its sandy grounds are full of palm trees and blossoming flowers, and the whole property is tidy enough for barefoot exploring. Upon arriving (usually by boat) at La Perla, guests are ferried from the dock to a floating “check-in” area where they’ll get their keys, a map of the resort, and an ice-cold Perla-branded coconut. There’s no need for shoes anymore—you’re on island time now. Clusters of two- to five-bedroom villas command the beachfront and a hand-written standing blackboard remind you which one is your group’s own.

Like every gemstone, no two villas at La Perla del Caribe are the same. Inside, villas decor range from Mexican, Morrocan, and Mayan inspired, further spelling out ‘unique’ with each arch, alcove, and rug.

With a group, villas can be far more affordable than a luxury hotel in town that’s on par with La Perla sleeping up to 11 guests, and you’ll still enjoy concierge service and a shared pool.  Plus at just 6 miles outside of San Pedro Town, La Perla offers a heightened sense of privacy. Almost like a private island feel.

There’s no onsite restaurant, but a private chef is ready to jump in to save the day; your concierge even stocks your villa’s fridge on request, ready for your arrival. After all, the sea-facing deluxe kitchen only enhances your cooking. If you’re not up to cooking, take a leisurely stroll along the beach to any of the nearby resorts; the nearby Matachica Resort specializes in French fusion, while further north, Portofino Beach Resort does Caribbean cuisine its due diligence.

The seaside resort pool acts as the resort epicenter, offering plenty of lounge space on its tiled deck or under its modern wood pergola. Or, post up in your villa’s game room (that even comes with its own billiards table) or sunroom’s woven hammock.

Schedule a massage, borrow a kayak, or throw a line off their dock. All in all, La Perla del Caribe is a gem on Northern Ambergris Caye’s coast to kick back without any distractions. Instead, savor the solitude and dive deep into quality time with just you and yours.

And if you’ve got a particularly large group (resort buy-out anyone?), it’s even easier to rent out the resort to have it entirely to yourself. Whether it’s a family reunion, destination wedding, or otherwise, La Perla awaits. Learn more here.
