Halloween as a fun, family-friendly holiday is an American invention that Belize has adopted warmly. During October, you’ll see locals, tourists and expats dressed up as witches, zombies, pirates, vampires and ghosts. Bars and shops decorate in typical holiday themes like pumpkins and witch brooms. You can find pumpkin desserts and even pumpkin latte.

Halloween means costume contests, Halloween parties and special beachfront celebrations. Traditionally, the best places to party are San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Placencia. Here are a few festivities to enjoy in Placencia!
The weather cools down in October, but it’s still warm and bright enough to spend time outdoors. Spend your days enjoying all your favorite Belize activities. Snorkel on the Belize Barrier Reef, zip-line in the jungle, or visit an ancient Maya city. Smaller crowds make it safer and more enjoyable to enjoy these activities in the fall.
Los Finados
Like most countries in Central America, Belize celebrates the reunion of the living and the dead known as Dia de los Muertos. Belizeans call the holiday Los Finados. This three-day celebration of life and death was an ancient Maya ritual. Today, the Maya and Mestizos of Belize celebrate it from November 1 through November 3.
During this three-day religious holiday, believers create elaborate altars where they place offerings for the dead. On the third day, they attend a Catholic mass and then proceed to the cemetery to bid their loved ones a final farewell. On November 9, they light candles along the roads to help the last souls find their way to the cemetery.
If the ceremonies are taking place this year, you can see them in Benque Viejo del Carmen. This quaint town is in Belize’s western region on the Guatemalan border.
