How to Enjoy A Caribbean Holiday Season in Belize

by Khaila Gentle

The holiday season in the Caribbean is truly something else. We have sand instead of snow, coconut trees instead of mistletoes, and sorrel instead of egg nog (though we have our own version of that, too). Looking to celebrate the holidays the Caribbean way this year? Here are some fun ways you can do just that, right here in Belize.

Exchange Christmas Turkey for Grilled Lobster

Ditch the Christmas turkey (we’ll forgive you for keeping the ham) and exchange it for some freshly grilled lobster, complete with a rich garlic butter sauce. In Belize, the holiday season is also lobster season. That means you’re bound to find it on the menu in restaurants and bars across the country. Spending the holidays in San Pedro? Check out Lily’s Treasure Chest for some grilled lobster tails alongside a helping of rice and beans.

Have Some Sorrel Stout While Watching the Sunset

In the Caribbean, nothing marks the holiday season quite like sorrel. Made from the tropical Hibiscus flower, sorrel drinks are often sweet and sometimes warmly spiced. Here in Belize, Belikin Beer’s seasonal Sorrel Stout is a quintessential holiday drink. Enjoy it at your favorite bar, like Rain Restaurant & Rooftop Terrace on Ambergris Caye. And while you’re at it, feel free to admire some stellar sunsets.

Exchange Snow in Your Hair for Sand in Your Toes

There’s no snow during the Caribbean holiday season, but there are lots of warm, sandy beaches. That includes down south in Placencia. Here, you can enjoy having your toes in the sand while you sip on a piña colada (or a glass of rum popo if you’re feeling extra festive) at beachside bars like Tipsy Tuna.

Have a Blast at the Christmas Bram

There’e no place quite like Belize to have a fun Caribbean Christmas, and travel blog TripSavvy agrees!

“Belize on Central America’s east coast is known for amazing wildlife, jungles, and beaches, and there are plenty of activities to enjoy during a vacation. But if you are going for Christmas, the holiday is so loved in Belize that it’s celebrated all of December,” notes their writers.

One of the highlights of the holiday season in Belize is the iconic Christmas Bram. A historically Kriol (Creole) tradition, it involves dancing to the rhythms of Belizean “Brukdown” music, and of course, enjoying plenty of food and drink.

But no matter where you are, the team at Caribbean Culture + Lifestyle would like to wish you a joyous and prosperous holiday season!
