San Pedro’s Farmer’s Market: A Monthly Weekend Event at The Truck Stop

by Dion Vansen

Since 2016, the San Pedro community in Belize has been promoting local entrepreneurs and encouraging the consumption of local homegrown products via a monthly event named Farmer’s Market. It’s a mini trade show in which the freshest of products are for sale in an inviting setting one mile north of downtown at The Truck Stop. Mark your calendars because the next Farmer’s Market is set for Saturday, July 2 from 11 am to 2 pm — and it’s the Lobster Fest edition! Find samples and live music with Dennis Wolfe just one mile north of the bridge. And because it’s summer, cool off with Two5 Craft Beer and Belikin Beer that’ll have samples all event long, plus lots of swag giveaways. This is a free event open to the public.

About the San Pedro Farmers Market at The Truck Stop

But it’s not just fresh produce. The upcoming farmer’s market event will see available products such as organic spices and seasonings, local smoked meats, baked goods, and even specialty juices for detoxification. And who knows which new vendors will join in on the fun for the next one? Last month for June’s event, the market had choice options for those looking for Father’s Day, including a stall with premium authentic cigars. Likewise, the market included services from non-profit and conservation-minded organizations such as ACES Wildlife Rescue, San Pedro Animal Hospital, and Turtle Ecologic.

All in all, the monthly San Pedro Farmer’s Market at The Truck Stop allows people to discover new services and products not only available on the island but available from the mainland as well. Meet new people, try new things, and support locals! The market is also known for inspiring talented entrepreneurs, who end up developing their product ideas and putting them out for sale. After all, the farmer’s market began as a means to provide variety to the growing population on Ambergris Caye. The experience of attending a local market will also give you the opportunity to mingle with the local community in Belize.

The market calls on those who make or grow something that they may want to sell to use this venue to showcase themselves. From past farmers market, the activity has proven to be successful, and the public is once again invited to come out and support it on July 2 from 11 am to 2 pm at The Truck Stop outside San Pedro Town. And if you’ve got something you want to showcase, shoot them a message on Facebook to join this month’s vendor list!
