Perhaps one of the best ways to learn more about destination, museums play an important role in preserving the heritage of a country. From art to music to history and even science, there’s a type of museum to fit every niche and interest one can think of.  Whether you’re a history buff, you’re learning to lean into slow travel, or you’re looking for a creative date idea, here are some Belize museums perfect for taking a deep dive into Belize’s culture and history.

Gulisi Garifuna Museum

With a long and colorful history, whose tale includes exile, resistance, and perseverance, the Garifuna people of Belize boast a truly fascinating culture. Experience that culture when visiting the towns and villages of southern Belize, including Dangriga Town, the home of the Gulisi Garifuna Museum.

Founded in 2004 by the National Garifuna Council, this museum features exhibits on Garifuna traditions, revered heroes and freedom fighters like Chief Joseph Chatoyer, and even full multimedia experiences.

The Museum of Belize

Perhaps Belize’s most well known museum, what was once Her Majesty’s Prison is now the go-to place for lessons on Belize’s heritage, history, and culture. Learn about Belize’s days as a colony under the British. Or take a stroll through a gallery of Maya artefacts. There are even exhibits featuring old postage stamps and vintage photos. Most recently, the Museum of Belize hosted a special exhibiton featuring artwork by famed painter and muscian Pen Cayetano.

The Houses of Culture

Belize’s Houses of Culture are run by the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH). From Banquitas House of Culture in Orange Walk to the former Government House in Belize City, each of these Belize museums has something unique to offer curious travelers. They also serve as community centers and cultural hubs for locals and visitors alike.

Travellers Heritage Museum

A museum fit for the lover of libations, the Travellers Heritage Musuem is found on the Philip Goldson Highway in Belize City. Enjoy an informative tour through this small but fascinating museum. Take a trip back in time as you learn about how the country’s number one rum manufacturer got its start. And, when you’re done, enjoy some free samples of Belizean rums and spirits.

Studio Gallery Cayetano

Head to sleepy Dangriga Town for an immersive art and culture experience. The father of the punta rock genre, Pen Cayetano, is also one of Belize’s most reknowned artists. He and his wife have an art studio gallery at their home in the country’s culture capital. Opened in 2009, the Pen Cayetano Studio Gallery is one of Dangriga’s most beloved highlights.
