La Ruta Maya River Challenge usually takes place on the holiday celebrating National Heroes and Benefactors Day in Belize on March 9th. Teams from all over the country compete and paddle 175 miles down the Belize River. As they glide speedily on the waters, the cheers by spectators along the way give them energy. On a fateful Wednesday in November 1823, the shores of Belize’s southern coastline were blessed by the arrival of the Garifuna people. The date of November 19 has therefore been allocated to commemorating Garifuna Settlement Day. The festivities begin the night before with plenty of drumming and dancing. On the day itself, head to the beach at sunrise for the reenactment of the arrival called Yurumein.
