by Dion Vansen

Heading to Ambergris Caye this summer? Planning to be out on the sea swimming and enjoying some unique water activities? Well, say no more as Ambergris Caye has endless options for that perfect aquatic adventure. Many of these can be done on the same day or you can pace yourself and enjoy one at a time if you are spending a week or so on this beautiful Caribbean island. Let us share with you what are some of these options and where you can get started once you have settled in your accommodations.

Snorkeling and diving

Diving with Ramon’s Village.

Explore Belize’s Barrier Reef by taking a snorkeling or a diving trip to any of the marine reserves off the east coast of Ambergris Caye. Some of these world-class renowned areas include the iconic Hol Chan Marine Reserve south of the island or the majestic Mexico Rocks National Parks heading along the northern coast. You can book such adventure tour operators like Ambergris Divers, located in the downtown area, on the beach of the Sunbreeze Hotel

Fly fishing

This is another favorite water activity done on the leeward side of Ambergris Caye, on the flats located by the lagoon side. One of the key players in this fishing sport attracting thousands of anglers to Ambergris Caye every year is the Tres Pescados Fly Shop in the heart of the island’s town of San Pedro. They offer guided fly-fishing trips offering a lifetime experience. They even host an annual tournament called Tres Pescados with the sport’s stars the fish species Bonefish, Tarpon, and Permit. This activity will even challenge you to land a ‘Grand Slam,’ which happens after you catch the three of the fish species mentioned above on the same day.

Hobie cat sailing

Ever wanted to sail alone over the pristine waters of the Caribbean, while enjoying stunning views of Ambergris Caye? Head to Caribbean Villas on the beach, south of town, where you will find on the beach, the Belize Sailing Center. You can rent one of their Hobie Cats and even get some lessons on how to best use it. This small catamaran for around four persons is easy to learn to sail and guarantees a fun day.

Parasailing

This recreational activity will give you the opportunity to have a bird’s eye view of Ambergris Caye and the majestic barrier reef. The folks at Castaway Caye Watersports and Belize Parasail Plus greet you with a beverage of your choice before getting on the boat. Then, its out to the sea from where you are towed behind the boat while attached to a canopy wing resembling a parachute. As you float 300 feet above, this will be the experience of your lifetime.
