Are you looking for a tropical getaway that won’t break the bank? Belize is the perfect destination for budget-conscious travelers who still want to experience Central America’s jaw-dropping beauty and adrenaline-filled adventures. This pocket-sized country has more to offer than just sandy beaches and clear blue waters. While many vacation here to indulge in classic tourist activities, Belize also provides extraordinary adventures that won’t hurt your pocket in the process. With budget-friendly places capturing the true essence of Belize, your experience here will be every bit as enjoyable as anyone else’s. Here we highlight two charming vacation spots in Belize that offer amazing experiences without a high price tag.

San Ignacio: Flora, Fauna and Food

This eminent town is constantly coming up in conversation, whether by locals or travelers. San Ignacio is a popular tourist hub for good reason, but this doesn’t mean it’s expensive! Famous for its gorgeous greenery, breathtaking scenery, and delicious eateries, San Ignacio is perfect for those on a budget. With so many things to do that it’s hard to pick just one, you’ll soon realize why visitors keep coming back.

Nestled beside flourishing jungles and thriving ecosystems, San Ignacio is a sight to behold. This is why simply exploring the surroundings is the cheapest activity yet. Embark on winding trails where you discover exotic plants and even more eccentric critters.

At the San Ignacio Resort Hotel, you can spend an entire day exploring the 17-acre private estate with an adventurous Tea Tasting Medicinal Tour or on-site bird watching. After, you can visit their Green Iguana Conservation Project. This hands-on experience is as thrilling as it is informative. Make sure to capture some Instagram-worthy shots of you holding the beloved “bamboo chicken” (green iguana).

Not sure where to stay? The San Ignacio Resort Hotel will cater to your every need. Not only do they have amazing activities, but the on-site restaurant and accommodations are spectacular. Sink into feather-soft beds at night, and break the dawn with a truly delicious and traditionally Belizean breakfast. We guarantee that pillow-soft fryjacks are an incredible start to an adventure-filled day.

Furthermore, you can always venture out in town on foot. Meet locals happy to share their experiences living here in Belize. Try some snacks that won’t cost more than a couple of Belize dollars. Or, take a stroll through the Farmer’s Market and take in the vividly eye-catching fruits and refreshing drinks.

Benque Viejo del Carmen: ‘Where History and Nature Meet’

This sleepy little town lives up to its motto every day. Blanketed by verdant trees and soundtracked by the calming sound of the running river, Benque Viejo del Carmen is a tranquil haven. It’s also just fifteen minutes away from San Ignacio. Moreover, you’ll have the quintessential Belizean experience without spending a pretty penny. Picturesque and old-fashioned in every way possible, this western Belize town is an untapped treasure.

First, start your visit with an exciting adventure to the Maya Ruins of Xunantunich, named ‘Maiden of the Rock’ in Maya, that’s just a few minutes outside of town.  You’ll cross the scenic Mopan River by ferry and hop off for a walk to the archaeological site. The impressive ‘El Castillo’ stands 130 feet tall, making it the second tallest structure in Belize. Here, your only costs will be the ferry, snacks, and water.

Another budget-friendly excursion is visiting Benque’s House of Culture. Learn all about the mestizo community that thrives in this small town and how it has changed over the years. This museum contains many photos of the country’s past, so you’ll see how Belize evolved before your very eyes.

After a day of exploring, be sure to take a break on the banks of the Mopan River. Dip your toes into cascading cool waters and refresh after an exhilarating day. Snag some awesome souvenirs and tasty Maya meals.

Just by visiting these two towns, you’ll see how easy and affordable it is to vacation in Belize. Get the perfect dose of nature, wildlife, and history when traveling to San Ignacio and Benque Viejo del Carmen.
