Enter the magentaverse in Belize with Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year: Viva Magenta. A vibrant color descended from the red family, Viva Magenta (also known as PANTONE 18-1750) exudes joy and optimism. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director at the Pantone Color Institute, the color of the year galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.
This year’s Color of The Year is powerful and empowering. It is an animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint
Wondering where you can see this vibrant color in real life while in Belize? Here are some suggestions
In Blooming Bougainvilleas
Bougainvilleas are an iconic flower in Belize, having even been featured in the country’s most reknowned novel, Zee Edgell’s Becka Lamb. This flowering vine plant can grow to be up to forty feet tall. And, it often adorns traditional Belizean homes as a trellis. Paper thin petals can come in a variety of colors, including the most popular, bright magenta.
In Traditional Embroidery
Through the art of embroidery, Belize’s Maya people have kept their traditions and culture alive for centuries. In addition to traditional carvings, sewing and embroidery work have become a source of income for many as the handiwork has become popular with tourists over the years.
In Hotel Decor
Much like 2022’s Color of the Year, you can get your fix of Viva Magenta right at your resort or hotel. La Perla del Caribe on Ambergris Caye, for example, constantly impresses guests with their colorful villas. Dwellings like Villa Topaz and Villa Opal sport vibrant walls, furniture, bedding, and more.
On Brightly Colored Murals
Belize’s art scene in burgeoning. And as a testament to this, more and more colorful murals are being unveiled across the country. The one featured above is located on on Barrier Reef Drive in San Pedro Town.
In Creative Cocktails
No vacation is complete without a delicious cocktail (or mocktail). And here in the Caribbean, we can get pretty creative with our drinks. Experience Pantone’s Color of the Year when you sip on a drink at your resort bar like the Jaguar Bar at Blancaneaux Lodge.

The Pantone Color Institute has been selecting a color of the year for the past two decades. Every year, the company chooses a hue that is reflective of the current mood after observing current trends in fashion, film, home decor, and more.
Last year’s color was the soft and subtle Very Peri, which can also be enjoyed in Belize. Meanwhile, the choice for 2020 was Classic Blue, meant to “provide a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit”.
