After just an hour’s drive, you’ll board a riverboat and go through a beautiful watery wilderness filled with wetlands and lagoons. You may see hawks, kites, and falcons as well as dainty jacanas. The name Lamanai means “submerged crocodile” in Maya. Here you’ll find huge masks of dead rulers and gods, as well as the Copal and Ramon trees that were important to the ancient inhabitants. You may also hear the howler monkeys that make this place their home.

For nature lovers, there is The Belize Zoo, which is just a half-hour away. Here you’ll find over 100 native species including the elusive jaguar, as well as other cats such as the ocelot and margay, a variety of monkeys, tapirs, and of course many vivid tropical birds such as the scarlet macaw and the toucan. Or take a slightly longer trip to the Baboon Sanctuary, which includes a small history museum and visitors’ center, which were built with assistance from the World Wildlife Fund and the Zoological Society of Milwaukee County.

Adrenaline junkies will find the zipline and cave tours a must. For those who prefer to see the city itself, there are also tours of Belize City which will allow you to see all the major sites, including the only manual swing bridge in the world and the oldest Anglican Cathedral in Central America.
