As of 1:00 PM local time on April 21st, 2020, Belize confirms its first COVID-19 coronavirus recovery. Since the most recent coronavirus case was reported on April 13th, Belize has consecutively not reported any new COVID-19 cases for the 7th consecutive day.  According to the Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero, patients must test negative twice to be declared recovered. Most cases have showed little to no symptoms, and continue to recover privately. This confirmation comes in today’s “Ask the Experts” session, hosted by Dr. Manzanero.

You [would] need two negative results which should be in two consecutive days. We want to ascertain that people at that point are negative”, says Dr. Manzanero.

Editor’s Note: A second recovered case was confirmed at 5:00 pm local time, April 21st, 2020. This confirmation comes directly from the Ministry of Health.  Additionally, the districts of Stann Creek, Toledo, and Orange Walk all remain COVID-19 free in Belize. Of the 18 positive coronavirus cases, two cases have died while two cases have now officially recovered. Fifty-eight (58) further tests are currently under investigation awaiting results. In total, Belize has conducted approximately 785 coronavirus tests.

Case Updates

As quarantine measures remain in effect all over the country, the MOH implores Belizeans to help fight the spread of COVID-19 in Belize by staying home. The majority of Belize’s COVID-19 cases are found in the Cayo District and Belize District, in San Ignacio and Belize City, respectively. Additionally, the Ministry of Health has further extended the 14-day period to a 21-day patient quarantine. Citizens are encouraged to shelter in place to flatten the curve of COVID-19 in Belize. Sundays have since been declared a total country-wide shutdown during the quarantine, following the most recent Statutory Instrument.
