The country of Belize may be small geographically, but it is big on biodiversity, intriguing cultures, and unique adventures. Belize is also an anomaly among its Central American and Caribbean counterparts. It is the least densely populated country in Central America and the only one with English as its official national language. Bordered by the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, it is also home to the tallest waterfall in Central America and hides the most extensive cave system in the region. Belize is tiny but mighty when it comes to natural wonders and unforgettable experiences. Here are four of the best Belize activities to try on your vacation to familiarize yourself with the country.

Glover’s Reef Atoll and the Blue Hole are among some of the world-renowned dive sites on many scuba enthusiasts’ bucket lists. Meanwhile, snorkeling with sea turtles and nurse sharks at Hol Chan Marine Reserve or the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve is an unforgettable experience for young and old alike. Even if you never get wet, you can still appreciate the beauty of the barrier reef by taking an island hopping tour and visiting a few of the country’s more than 400 cayes.

A unique and thrilling activity, cave tubing is one of the coolest excursions on the mainland. Entering the underground labyrinth of Belize’s extensive cave system can seem a bit daunting but you’ll soon relax along the lazy river ride as amazement overrides trepidation. You will be in awe of the cathedral-like caverns and intricate subterranean structures that nature has formed over centuries of erosion and accretion.

Belize has an estimated 300 caves, many of which still house a treasure trove of ancient Maya offerings. The most popular destination for cave tubing is the Caves Branch Outpost, located within the Nohoch Che’en Archaeological Reserve, near the village of Frank’s Eddy. All-day tours through the extensive network of subterranean passages can be supplemented with zip line and rappelling adventures.

The cultures of Belize are as vibrant and diverse as its landscapes. Exploring them through food is a fun and fulfilling way to familiarize yourself with the country and its traditional cuisine. You can take a walking food tour such as the one led by Taste Belize around Placencia Village and sample food such as tamales, garnaches, seaweed shakes, Black Dinna, and Belizean Bittas. Get hands-on with a cultural cooking class and learn how to make traditional dishes such as Garifuna Hudut or Creole Bread. Create your own confection the Mayan way with a bean-to-bar chocolate-making course.
Whatever you do, don’t miss sampling the country’s unofficial national dish- rice and beans– it is a hearty meal of tender stewed chicken and rich coconut rice with black beans that is eaten daily and found easily throughout Belize.
Belize is full of enchanting experiences and exciting activities. Try these and other excursions to make a memorable and authentic vacation adventure.
