Quiet Vacationing: The Rising Millennial Travel Trend (and Where to Do It in Belize)

by Megan Rodden

In recent years, millennials have been redefining travel.  We’ve seen an increased interest in bucket-list adventures and meaningful experiences over strictly leisure trips. There has also been a focus on sustainable tourism and neutral impact travel as this socially conscious demographic is inclined to consider whether destinations and travel providers align with their values.  The generation known for being tech-savvy and highly adaptable is also the one that has grown to value a strong work-life balance.  In this remote, work-from-anywhere age, the trend of Quiet Vacationing has emerged as a way to travel without necessarily eating up days of PTO.  Here’s why Quiet Vacationing is on the rise and where you can do it in Belize.

Maybe you’ve felt the sting of a resentful co-worker upon returning to the office after a vacation; or worse yet, the bitter disappointment of having your PTO request denied by your supervisor.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to enjoy a little getaway without anyone knowing?  That is precisely what some remote and hybrid workers are doing, and so long as they complete all necessary tasks and maintain the illusion of business as usual, no one is ever the wiser!

What if employees working from anywhere—whether at home or halfway across the world—is neither “quiet” nor a “vacation,” but rather a natural evolution of the work-from-anywhere culture?

Quiet Vacationing isn’t an entirely new concept—it is of a similar vein to Digital Nomads and Bleasure Travel—but it is certainly a fast-growing trend along with other “quiet travel” practices as Millennials and Gen Zs become less satisfied with corporate culture and place more value on self-care.  It seems as if a new cheat code for life has been discovered: Quiet Vacationing could be the solution to the work-life balance conundrum.  Being perpetually plugged in is a double-edged sword as workers often struggle to fully disconnect during their time off, but technology also allows us to practically trot the globe without missing a beat when it comes to business.

Where to Go Quiet Vacationing in Belize

Placencia, on the southern coast of Belize, has earned a reputation as a destination for remote workers and Digital Nomads.  The quaint and quiet 15-mile-long peninsula has reliable, high-speed internet and exudes tropical charm.  While there are an abundance of eateries and beach bars to entertain visitors, Placencia is not known for its party scene or late-night revelry.  Quiet Vacationers won’t find themselves tempted to stay out partying past bedtime and inadvertently sleeping through their early morning zoom meeting.  Remote workers can enjoy the peaceful solitude of an early morning stroll along nearly empty beaches before heading off to their “anywhere office.”  Imagine settling down in a lounge chair or hammock instead of a cubicle and answering emails poolside with a frosty beverage in hand.

Quiet Vacationing allows workers to remain productive and avoid the guilt of taking time off but still have incredible travel experiences.  Placencia offers several half-day tours that can be enjoyed before or after “work.”  Schedule a sunset cruise, a half-day cultural cooking class, or a dinner-time food tour as a reward for a (remote) job-well-done.  Sometimes all you need to feel rested and recharged is a simple change of scenery, so a hush-hush getaway can be restorative without requiring a break from your job and no loss of momentum.  So if you’re itching for a little adventure but maybe have a project at work that you just can’t walk away from, come to Belize on a Quiet Vacation, and don’t worry—your secret is safe with us!
