A Chic Beachfront Escape at Almond Beach Resort in Hopkins

by Khaila Gentle

Getting to watch the sun rise over the sea from the comfort of a soft bed is one experience that’s sure to leave an impression on you. It is, however, just one of many memorable moments that await on the beaches of Hopkins, Belize. At Almond Beach Resort—found at Jaguar Reef just south of the village proper—spectacular sunrises are the pièce de résistance of an already remarkable stay. With its intimate rooms, suites, and cottages, handwoven hammocks swaying in the sea breeze, and all-around stunning views, Almond Beach is charming, chic, and the embodiment of “beachfront bliss” in Hopkins.

Take a Trip to Beautiful Hopkins

Beyond its gorgeous stretches of beach—arguably some of the best in the country—the village of Hopkins is where anyone craving a moment’s peace and a healthy dose of authentic experiences would (and should) go. Quite often, the rhythmic beats of Garifuna drums fill the air—a testament to this tiny village’s identity as a cultural stronghold. Plus, local eateries like Ella’s Cool Spot serve up fresh meals and newfound connections.

Meanwhile, a bit further south, the impressive resort zone serves as proof of what many are already keen on: people love visiting Hopkins. Not as fast-paced as Ambergris Caye, and not as busy as Placencia, Hopkins is “just right” in every sense. At Jaguar Reef, a handful of boutique resorts offer respite to travelers craving a side of comfort with the culture and adventure.

Where to Stay: Almond Beach Resort

Winding stone pathways covered in sand lead the way to Almond Beach Resort, an extension of its sister property, The Lodge at Jaguar Reef. On the way to your room, or perhaps the overwater bar, you might encounter Captain Larry, the resident beach captain who’s always ready to brighten guests’ days with a hibiscus flower or a refreshing coconut.

On the beach, swaying hammocks beckon you to kick back and relax. But with the ever-imposing, Big Dock Ceviche Bar just nearby—two stories tall and boasting overwater net hammocks—it’s a difficult choice to make. If you do opt for the bar though, be sure to order some ceviche. Enjoy fresh shrimp (or conch) with julienned onions and tomatoes alongside crisp cassava chips.

For something a bit more filling, head to the Paddle House or Don Tonito’s, both a part of the Belize Collection’s diverse lineup of restaurants, and both a part of the experience at Almond Beach.

Now, about that sunrise.

Room Highlight: Beachfront Spa Room

At Almond Beach Resort, accommodation options run the gamut from deluxe suites with plunge pools to romantic beachfront cottages. Take it from this writer, though, and go for the Beachfront Spa Room

A spacious studio with a king-sized bed plus a twin trundle day bed, the Beachfront Spa Room, as the name suggests sits steps away from the beach. It’s modern, chic, and pristine, from the bathroom—which has both a soaker tub and standing shower—right down to the marble tiles.

Outside, the veranda provides ample space for lounging and soaking in the views. But, if you’d like for something even more cozy, revel in the fact that the bed also faces the sea.

At night, fall asleep to the sound of waves lapping against the Hopkins coast. Then, in the morning, brew yourself a cup of coffee and watch as the rising sun paints the sky in a myriad of hues, all from the comfort of your room.

The Beachfront Spa room can sleep up to 2 guests. The nightly rate is US $299 (low season) and US $359 (high season). Book a stay at Almond Beach Resort here.
