The occasional rainfall is a small price in exchange for the riveting underwater experiences you’ll find in Belize. Whether you’re PADI certified or a beginner snorkeler, there’s no shortage of hotspots to explore. Here’s a guide to some of the best snorkeling and diving spots to visit in Belize over the next few months and what you can expect to encounter beneath turquoise waves.

Located just off the coast of Ambergris Caye, Hol Chan Marine Reserve is always buzzing with activity. This protected area, which translates to “little channel” in Mayan, is home to a diverse array of marine life. Furthermore, September and October are a great time to visit, as the warmer waters bring sea turtles, stingrays, and nurse sharks. One of the biggest draws to Hol Chan is Shark Ray Alley, a section of the reserve where nurse sharks and southern stingrays gather in large numbers. It’s an adrenaline-pumping experience to snorkel or dive among these gentle creatures as they glide gracefully through the water. Despite the rainy season, visibility remains excellent, and you can expect to see everything from colorful parrotfish to hawksbill turtles.

For those looking for an adventure, Glover’s Reef Atoll is a must-visit snorkeling and diving destination. One of Belize’s most pristine atolls, it boasts over 700 patch reefs, making it a snorkeling and diving wonderland. The reef’s sheltered lagoons and coral walls are home to an array of species, from colorful sponges and corals to spotted eagle rays and sea turtles. The rainy season typically means fewer crowds, giving you a more intimate and peaceful experience in the already isolated atoll. Divers can also explore several spectacular drop-offs, where the reef plunges into the deep blue, creating a dramatic underwater landscape.

Did you know Belize is home to the second-largest barrier reef in the world? Stretching 190 miles along the coast of Belize, this reef is home to countless dive sites and snorkeling hotspots, each offering its own unique underwater experience. Some of the best spots, however, can be found in the country’s southern region. The reef is brimming with marine life, as warm waters attract fish and other species.

While September and October fall within Belize’s rainy season, this doesn’t mean the entire period is a washout. In fact, many days are bright and sunny with only brief afternoon showers. With warm waters, thriving marine life, and fewer crowds, fall is the perfect time to dive into the beauty of Belize’s marine ecosystems.
