The 2018 Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival!
Muses were present at the Placencia Peninsula this weekend!
On what has come to be called “the narrowest street of the world”, the 15th annual Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival was in full swing! Featuring local talent and showcasing the creativity of Belizean artists, this two-day event is a must-do on any itinerary.
Since 2003 the sidewalk art festival has drawn visitors for around the world to take part in the festivities. The sidewalk brims with paintings, vendors, clothing, homemade beauty products, and wood carvings among other crafts. Expect to see exquisite handmade jewelry like Kaj Expressions to the electric percussions of Garifuna drummers. Nevertheless, there are many things to discover strolling down the sidewalk.
Belikin Limited Edition
This year, Belikin upped the ante with their debut of twelve limited edition bottles. The collection entitled “Onli eena Belize” (only in Belize) was spearheaded by Gilvano Swasey, a talented artist in his own right. As a result, each bottle features an original painting meant to depict the spirit of Belize.
At Belikin’s Limited Edition release party, the beautiful work of these artists was exhibited with the accompaniment of live paranda music and of course ever-flowing Belikin beer! In short, it was a night to remember and the perfect kick-off to the festival! The bottles were available for sale at the sidewalk festival, as were paintings from some of the featured artists like Walter Castillo.
The Ellysian
When attending the festival, it is always sensible to stay in town. The Ellysian is a boutique hotel conveniently located within the village. Consequently, you are a few steps away from the beach and a short walking distance from local shops, and eateries. While you find yourself in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the village, this hotel offers a quiet sanctuary whilst inside.
It is a hotel with a fresh take on hospitality; space where the female spirit is celebrated. The theme of modern chic meeting local charm is noted in the décor and atmosphere. Instead of room numbers, you’ll find inspirational messages on every door like “Be here now”, or “No one is you”. It is a lovely place where you can come to be nurtured and retreat from the adventures of the day.
The Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival is a vibrant celebration of creative culture in Belize and should not be missed! In conclusion, see you there next year!
