OUR FAVORITE TIME OF THE YEAR IS HERE, LOBSTER SEASON!

As we jump into summer, fishermen are jumping into the sea, on a quest for the Caribbean Spiny Lobster! The lobster season officially opened on June 15th, 2019 and will remain open until February 14th, 2020.

The Spiny Lobster is caught using traps which are placed in the clear waters of Belize, both North, and South of the country. Another popular method of catching them is by the fishermen free diving.

Sold by independent fishermen and at local fish markets, the Spiny Lobster is a top marine export and foreign exchange earner for Belize. It holds economic and cultural significance for many Belizeans, as many fishermen’s livelihood depends on these crustaceans. According to Belize’s Fisheries Department, fishing directly employees over 3,000 fishers.

At the start of the season when there’s an abundance, you can find the cost of lobster at its lowest. In an effort to safeguard the industry, the lobster must meet certain standards in the Fisheries Act of 1948. The tail must be more than 112 g (4 oz.) in weight and more than 7.6 cm (3 in) in length.

Many restaurants around the country offer Lobster dishes ranging between $40.00 to $60.00 BZE.

Whole-grilled lobster, curry lobster, lobster kebabs and fritters are just a few top contenders you will find on menus. Cooking at home, try Flavors of Belize’s homemade Mango Lobster Ceviche Recipe!
