Roaring Celebrations: How to Celebrate International Jaguar Day in Belize

by Andrea Murray

Every year on November 29th, wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists around the world come together to celebrate International Jaguar Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the conservation of this majestic big cat species. For those in Belize, this day takes on special significance, as the country is not only home to the elusive jaguar, but it boasts the world’s only Jaguar preserve: The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.

International Jaguar Day presents a crucial reminder of the importance of conserving and protecting the jaguar. It aims to highlight the threats jaguars face, including habitat loss, poaching, and conflicts with humans. By celebrating this day, we contribute to global efforts to ensure the survival and well-being of these magnificent creatures.

Belize takes pride in being home to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s first jaguar preserve. Spanning over 150 sq miles of beautiful rainforest, the sanctuary provides a haven for jaguars and other wildlife species.

loss of habitat combined with increased hunting of jaguar prey species such as pacas, deer, and peccary have contributed to increased survival pressures for the remaining jaguar population.

Recognizing the role jaguars play in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem, Belize has made commendable efforts to protect and preserve these iconic big cats. The Belize Zoo – Belize’s first and only zoo – makes an effort to rescue and rehabilitate jaguars, allowing those unable to return to the wild to become permanent residents and educational ambassadors.
