What You Need to Visit Belize

If you have a valid US or Canadian passport, you can stay in Belize for up to 30 days. However, your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months after your entry date.

What You Should Also Bring

If you’re planning to do any jungle hiking or walking around the Maya ruins, you should bring sturdy, comfortable hiking boots or walking shoes.

Bring insect repellent, river shoes, hats, and sunglasses. A water bottle is another must. The warm temperatures can dehydrate you quickly, especially if you’re doing jungle hiking, cave exploration or rappelling.

Money Matters

You can use US dollars in Belize at most hotels and tourist-oriented businesses, but your change is likely to be in Belizean dollars. Luckily, our currency is easy to figure out, as one US dollar is always pegged at two Belizean dollars.

Don’t expect to use debit or credit cards everywhere or to find ATMs around every corner. It’s a good idea to carry cash, especially if you’re going into rural areas or small villages.

Is Belize Safe for Solo Travelers?

While there is crime in some parts of the country, Belize is a very safe country to visit. Most of Belize’s crimes occur in parts of Belize City that are prey to gang activity.

Violence directed at tourists is extremely rare. If you stick to tourist-friendly areas and travel with a professional tour company, you won’t have any problems.

If you’re traveling by yourself to any foreign country, it’s always a good idea to follow these common-sense safety tips:

  • Don’t get intoxicated in public. It could land you in a dangerous situation.
  • Drugs and prostitution are illegal in Belize. Don’t go looking for them, and don’t respond if they’re offered to you.
  • Don’t wear expensive jewelry or show off your cash.
  • Driving by yourself at night is not recommended. The roads here can be poorly lit, poorly marked and unpaved. It’s easy to get lost.

Belize Is Ideal for Solo Travelers

With its sunny weather, friendly people and endless opportunities for outdoor fun, Belize is a great vacation destination. An all-inclusive vacation package is a great idea for solo travelers because all the work is done for you. Get ready for the solo trip of a lifetime.
