Celebrating the 2nd Annual Sharon Matola Day

Sharon Matola and Belize Zoo resident Junior Buddy
In June 2022, The Belize Zoo held its first ever Sharon Matola Day in honor of the woman who started it all. The “Queen Defender of Water and Wildlife” as one local newspaper so eloquently describes Matola, founded the zoo as a last ditch effort to care for a motley gang of animals. Since then, the zoo has grown to become a symbol of conservation and the protection of wildlife in Belize.

Sharon Matola Day, observed every first Saturday in June, takes place this year on Matola’s birthday. The zoo will be waiving all admission fees for the day. They’ve extended an invitation to the public to come and celebrate from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. During that time, guests have the chance to meet a special guest – Neo, the river otter. Neo will make his debut alongside wildlife biologist Jeff Corwin.

For animal enthusiasts, the zoo’s actual celebrity guest needs little to no introduction. The conservationist and animal enthusiast is known for his shows on Animal Planet and Disney Channel. But what some might not know is that Corwin’s passion for tropical rainforests was sparked while in Belize in 1984. In fact, he and the late Sharon Matola were close friends and Corwin is no stranger to the best little zoo in the world.
Tip: In lieu of the admission fees, guests are welcome to bring along donations of fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat for the zoo’s residents.
