During this initial phase of reopening, tourists in Belize can vacation inside its Tourism Safe Corridor. But what exactly is Belize’s Tourism Safe Corridor? As the entire overnight tourism sector moves towards “Tourism Gold Standard” Recognition—denoted with a seal of approval—those within the Safe Corridor are approved to reopen during Belize’s Phase 3. Inside, hotels, restaurants and tour operators have achieved Belize’s 9-point program for enhanced health and safety standards; by adapting new behaviors and procedures, both employees and travelers can be confident in the cleanliness and safety of Belize’s tourism product. Though those completing the 9-point program are awarded with a Gold Standard Seal of Approval, not every accommodation is inside the corridor. This seal certifies industry stakeholders who’ve embraced the safety protocols, and will be visible for all guests where practical, such as tour operator vehicles and vessels, hotel lobbies, primary doors of entry, etc.
Belize’s Tourism Safe Corridor
Belize’s Tourism Safe Corridor is only for approved hotels and tour operators trained to operate in this new environment for hosting international travelers. It will also limit interactions between guests and the local community thereby reducing the possible spread of the virus. The first grouping of hotels approved for reopening in the Tourism Safe Corridor are:
- those which have achieved Tourism Gold Standard Recognition, and
- provide full service to guests, including having transportation to offer pick-up/drop-off services from the airport; access to a restaurant/bar on property or the ability to offer catering services &/or grocery services (for condo-type properties); have a pool or access to beach front; and be able to provide isolated tours, limited to guests of the property only.
A list of the approved Gold Standard hotels for Belize’s Tourism Safe Corridor is available here, or directly from www.travelbelize.org.
Cross-Movement between other Gold Standard Hotel restaurants
While tours to sites and parks are arranged with your Tourism Gold Standard hotel, you can also arrange dining reservations to other Gold Standard Hotels in the Safe Corridor.
Food embodies cultural identity and has proven to be a very important part of the travel experience. This will allow visitors to be able to partake in a more diverse offering; that is, of delicious Belizean cuisine within the Safe Corridor.
With October 1 marking the reopening of Belize’s international airport, the health and safety protocols for tourists continue to be reviewed to ensure the guest experience is minimally impacted. As a guest, ask your Gold Standard Hotel for help making the necessary arrangements, such as reservations and transportation. Nonetheless, only Gold Standard approved transport, like hotel transfers or an approved Gold Standard tour operator, can transport guests from one property to the next. Additionally, front desk and concierge services within your Gold Standard Accommodation can make reservations on your behalf.
